Second Hand Equestrian Gear Is a Budget-Friendly Win

Itโ€™s no surprise โ€“ being an equestrian is not cheap. Between tack, apparel, feed, vet bills, and lessons, the costs can add up quickly. One of the smartest ways to save money without compromising on quality is by investing in second hand equestrian gear. From saddles and bridles to breeches and boots, used gear can offer the same performance as new equipment at a fraction of the cost.

At The Trainerโ€™s Loft, we proudly offer a wide selection of second hand equestrian gear, making it easier for riders of all levels to afford the essentials and upgrades they need!

Why Choose Second Hand?

The equestrian world thrives on tradition and quality gear is often built to last. Many items, especially leather tack and high end apparel, are durable enough to serve multiple riders spanning many years. Choosing second hand equestrian gear means that you are getting products that have already proven their value in the saddle. Additionally, it is a sustainable choice โ€“ extending the life of gear reduces waste and supports more environmentally conscious riding.

The Financial Benefits of Second Hand Equestrian Gear

Equestrian gear is no small investment. Saddles can cost anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars, while helmets, show coats, and boots also add up quickly. Buying used allows you to stretch your budget further, enabling you to afford higher end brands or specialty items that may be out of reach for some at full price.

At The Trainerโ€™s Loft, our second hand section is stocked with carefully inspected, gently used items that are priced with riders in mind. Whether you are gearing up for your very first lesson or replacing outgrown tack, shopping used is a smart way to build your kit without breaking the bank.

What to Look For in Second Hand Equestrian Gear

1. Saddles

Second hand saddles can offer incredible value, especially when they have been well cared for. Look for sound tree structures, even panels, and secure stitching. Minor cosmetic wear is common and does not usually impact performance.

2. Bridles and Leather Goods

Check bridles and leather goods for dryness or cracking, which may indicate that the items havenโ€™t been properly conditioned. A little cleaning and oiling can breathe new life into many pieces.

3. Riding Apparel

Breeches, show coats, and riding boots often have plenty of life left after the first owner. Be sure to check out seams, zippers, and sizing, and donโ€™t be afraid of items that need minor tailoring โ€“ especially if they are a great deal!

4. Helmets

Safety always comes first! This is the one item we do NOT recommend purchasing used. NEVER BUY A SECOND HAND HELMET, and always get fitted in person. We never recommend purchasing a used helmet โ€“ you have no way of knowing how old it is, or if itโ€™s been through a fall. Basic helmet safety rules recommend replacing your helmet every 5 years, and replacing immediately if you have had a fall where your head touched the ground.

Here at The Trainerโ€™s Loft, if you purchased the helmet through us and experienced a fall, if you bring us back the original helmet, you can redeem it for 10% off your next helmet purchase.

5. Grooming Supplies and Accessories

Used brushes, saddle pads, buckets, and boots can all be sanitized and reused without issue. These smaller items are perfect for filling out your tack trunk without spending a lot of money.

Tips for Smart Second Hand Shopping

  • Ask Questions: Donโ€™t hesitate to ask about the gearโ€™s history, brand, and condition.
  • Inspect Thoroughly: Look for wear and tears that might affect safety or function.
  • Try Before You Buy: If possible, test the fit of saddles and apparel to make sure itโ€™s right for you and your horse.
  • Shop from Reputable Resellers: Buying from a trusted source like The Trainerโ€™s Loft ensures that used items have been reviewed for quality and safety.

Upgrades Without Stress

Horses grow, riders change disciplines, and equestrian needs evolve. Buying and selling second hand equestrian gear gives you the flexibility to make changes without being locked into expensive equipment. It also allows newer riders to build confidence without the pressure of using the top dollar tack right away.
