The Dr. Bristol link and the French link differ in several ways. The Dr. Bristol link is not a Dressage legal mouthpiece, the French link is. The main difference is that the French link sits at the same angle as the rest of the mouthpiece, while the Dr. Bristol sits at a different angle. The Dr. Bristol will rest across the horse’s mouth until the horse comes against the bit at a certain angle, at which point, the edge of the Dr. Bristol center link will come against the tongue. This makes the mouthpiece a bit more corrective than a French link mouthpiece which typically stays flat against the tongue.

The MB 04 is similar to the MB 02 in that it will rotate on the tongue and apply tongue pressure, however, it has a small (ยผ”) port that introduces some tongue relief to the horse. The port allows the horse to swallow and move his tongue when he is moving forward and relaxed, which acts as a release or reward. The mouthpiece is curved, and it wraps around the bars and lips instead of pinching.

The fixed rings prevent pinching, whilst the sweet iron mouthpiece encourages salivation. The lozenge avoids a nutcracker action. Sweet iron mouthpieces are designed to oxidize to produce a sweet taste which helps with mouthing. The addition of copper to the mouth ensures the horse will not take up too much of a contact, ideal for horses that can take a hold. Stainless steel is used for the cheeks due to it being durable, easy to clean, and resistance to rust.

The MB 02 is the Myler alternative to the traditional French link or lozenge mouthpiece commonly used in snaffle bits. The MB 02 rotates onto the tongue, applying tongue pressure, but because the mouthpiece is curved, it wraps around the bars and lips instead of pinching. The barrel in the center applies approximately the same pressure on the tongue as a traditional three-piece mouthpiece; however, the barrel distributes the pressure more kindly and creates Independent Side Movementโข.
