Vitamin C, or Ascorbic Acid, is a water soluble vitamin found throughout the tissues of the horse’s body. It protects against free radicals produced during energy generation and immune reactions. Vitamin C can also return other antioxidants, like Vitamin E, to their active form.

Unlike humans, horses can synthesize their own Vitamin C in amounts sufficient to avoid classical deficiency. However, there can be times when high demand and short supply make a supplement desirable.

Horses on fresh green pasture get generous amounts of Vitamin C from their diet, but not those on hay. Horses in need of immune support may also benefit from a Vitamin C supplement. It has been documented that horses with longstanding respiratory issues have lower than normal levels of Vitamin C in their lungs.

Horses in need of tendon and ligament support may also benefit from Vitamin C supplementation, since it is important to the formation of collagen, the major protein in those tissues.

Vitamin C supplementation has been suggested for horses on alfalfa diets at high risk of developing mineral concentrations that can form anywhere in the gastrointestinal system. Vitamin C helps acidify the intestinal content so accumulations are less likely to form.

The usual rate of supplementation is 2,000 to 7,000 mg per day, although higher doses may be used when addressing an enterolith formation. Doses as high as 15,000 to 20,000 mg per day may bring about GI upset and diarrhea.
