A horse gag bit is a specialized bit that utilizes unique sliding cheekpieces (made of leather, cord, or nylon) to apply upward leverage in the horse’s mouth while also applying pressure to the poll.

How it Works:

• Elevates the Front End: When the rider pulls the reins, the bit slides up the cheekpieces, pulling the corners of the mouth up and creating downward pressure on the poll. This encourages the horse to elevate its head and neck, shifting its weight back toward its hindquarters.
• Delayed Action: The sliding action offers a delay in pressure, giving the horse a chance to soften before the full severity of the bit engages.
• Reining Options: English-style gags are sometimes used with two sets of reins (a regular snaffle rein and a gag rein) so the rider can seamlessly switch between standard pressure and leveraging power
